How to Crochet a Scrunchie with Mixed Stitches (US SC + DC - UK DC + TR)

After making your first scrunchie with only single crochet, it’s time to add a little more texture and variety! In this project, we’ll mix Single Crochet (US) / Double Crochet (UK) with Double Crochet (US) / Treble Crochet (UK).

This combination makes the scrunchie look fuller, with a wavy edge that feels playful and stylish.

Materials Needed:

  • 1 hair elastic (plain, no metal clasp)

  • Yarn: cotton or acrylic (DK/worsted weight)

  • Crochet hook: 4mm–5mm

  • Scissors & yarn needle

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Attach Yarn

    • Slip knot on hook.

    • Insert under elastic, pull through, and secure with a slip stitch.

  2. Work Mixed Stitches Around Elastic

    • Pattern: 1 Single Crochet (US) / Double Crochet (UK), followed by 1 Double Crochet (US) / Treble Crochet (UK).

    • Repeat this sequence all the way around the elastic.

    • Push stitches together so the elastic disappears.

  3. Finish Off

    • Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch.

    • Cut yarn, weave in ends.

✨ Pro Tips

  • For an even wavier look, try 2 double crochets for every 1 single crochet.

  • Alternate yarn colours for a striped effect.
