How to Hold Yarn and Hook Comfortably – Find Your Style

One of the most common frustrations beginners face is yarn slipping, tangling, or feeling awkward in the hands. Don’t worry — there is no single “right” way to hold your yarn. It’s about finding the style that feels natural and helps you control tension.

1. The Two Main Holds

  • Overhand (Knife Grip): The hook rests like a knife. Yarn flows over your fingers.

  • Pencil Grip: You hold the hook like a pencil, while yarn is tensioned with your other hand.

2. Controlling Yarn Tension
Wrap the yarn lightly around your fingers (commonly over the pinky, under the ring finger, over the index). This keeps stitches even. Adjust until it feels smooth, not tight.

3. Try Both Styles
Practice making a 15-chain foundation in each style. Which feels more natural? That’s your starting point.

4. Quick Tip
If your yarn squeaks or feels too tight → loosen your grip. If stitches are sloppy → tighten slightly. Balance is key!
