Today, we’re learning the Bar Stitch—a simple yet elegant textured stitch that creates raised horizontal bars across your fabric. This stitch is perfect for blankets, scarves, and stylish garments.

Materials & Tools

  • Yarn – Any weight, but DK or Aran works best

  • Hook – Recommended size for your yarn (4mm or 5mm)

  • Scissors

  • Darning Needle

 


 

Abbreviations (UK Terms)

(US conversions in brackets)

  • ch – Chain

  • dc – Double Crochet (US: Single Crochet)

  • tr – Treble Crochet (US: Double Crochet)

  • flo – Front Loop Only

  • blo – Back Loop Only

  • st(s) – Stitch(es)

Bar Stitch Pattern

Foundation Chain:

Make an even-numbered chain (e.g., 20, 22, 24, etc.).

Row 1:

  1. Dc in 2nd ch from hook, dc across. Turn.

Row 2:

  1. Ch 1 (does not count as a st).

  2. Dc in flo of next st, dc in blo of next st.

  3. Repeat from * to * across. Turn.

Row 3:

  1. Ch 1, repeat Row 2.

Continue repeating Row 2 for the pattern.
