Cluster Stitch

Hey Crocheters! ✨ It’s Nadia here, the owner and creator of New Mom Spirit!

If you’re looking for a beautiful, textured stitch that adds depth and dimension to your crochet projects, the Cluster Stitch is a must-learn! It creates a soft, puffy effect that’s perfect for blankets, scarves, and decorative pieces.

Let’s dive in!

What is the Cluster Stitch?

The Cluster Stitch is made by working multiple stitches together into a single stitch space. This gives it a raised, textured look that’s similar to bobbles or puff stitches but with a unique, more compact appearance.

Foundation Row

  1. Chain an even number of stitches.

  2. Work 1 dc (US: sc) in the second chain from the hook and across the row. Turn.

Pattern Rows

  1. Row 1: Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch). 1 dc (US: sc) in the first stitch, 1 cl (cluster stitch) in the next stitch. Repeat to the end. Turn.

  2. Row 2: Ch 1, 1 dc (US: sc) in each stitch across. Turn.

  3. Repeat Rows 1 & 2 until your project reaches the desired length.

💡 Tip: Cluster stitches can be worked in different ways, but the most common method is:

  • (Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through two loops) – repeat this step 3-5 times, then yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook.

Tips for Crocheting the Cluster Stitch

✅ Keep tension even – Too tight and the clusters won’t form properly, too loose and they won’t hold their shape.
✅ Experiment with different cluster sizes – Adding more loops makes it fluffier!
✅ Use contrasting yarn for a fun effect – Cluster stitches pop beautifully with different colors.
