Alpine Stitch

Hey Crocheters! ✨ It’s Nadia here, the owner and creator of New Mom Spirit!
I’ve been crocheting for over two decades—yes, you read that right! I picked up my first hook and yarn when I was just seven years old, sitting next to my dear grandmother. She taught me how to knit, crochet, read patterns, and—most importantly—how to create something beautiful out of nothing.
She passed away just three days before my birthday this year, and I miss her every single day. But every stitch I make carries a piece of her love, wisdom, and creativity. And now, I want to share that with you.
Back then, I didn’t know the names of the stitches—I just followed the symbols and figured things out by sight. It took years for me to learn the proper names and techniques, but I never stopped creating.
I was told so many times that “craft can’t feed you” and “you can’t compete with big brands and machines.” But you know what? They were wrong.
And I’m here to prove it.
💖 If you love crochet, you CAN turn it into something bigger.
🧶 If you dream of mastering stitches, you WILL get there.
🚀 And I’m here to help you level up—from beginner to PRO.
So, let’s dive into today’s gorgeous stitch! 🎉
What is the Alpine Stitch?
The Alpine Stitch is a beautifully textured stitch that creates a stunning, woven-like effect. It’s a combination of double crochet (UK treble) and front post stitches, giving it that deep, dimensional look.
This stitch is perfect for thick, cozy projects like blankets, scarves, beanies, and even cardigans. It works well with both solid and variegated yarns, and once you get the rhythm, it’s super fun to work up!
Skill Level
🔹 Best for: Advanced Beginners / Intermediate
🔹 Stitches Used: Chain (ch), Double Crochet (dc) [UK Treble (tr)], Front Post Double Crochet (fpdc) [UK Front Post Treble (fptr)]

Tips for Crocheting the Alpine Stitch
✅ Keep your tension even. The fpdc stitches can pull a little tight, so adjust accordingly.
✅ Choose a yarn with good stitch definition. Smooth yarns (like cotton or DK-weight acrylic) will show off the texture best!
✅ Practice before starting a big project. Work up a small swatch to get comfortable with the stitch pattern.
Projects You Can Make with the Alpine Stitch
The Alpine Stitch is perfect for:
🧣 Scarves & Cowls – The rich texture makes a thick, warm fabric!
🛋️ Blankets & Throws – Add a border, and you have a stunning, cozy piece!
🧢 Beanies & Hats – Great for creating a modern, textured look.
🧥 Sweaters & Cardigans – This stitch gives a beautifully structured fabric for garments.
Final Thoughts
The Alpine Stitch is one of my absolute favourites because of its depth, texture, and versatility! It’s a bit more advanced than basic stitches, but once you get the hang of it, it’s incredibly rewarding.
Now it’s your turn—grab your hook, pick your yarn, and start practicing!
